9 Reasons to Strength Train

June 24th, 2009 by Healthstyles Exercise Equipment

Do you hope to maintain quality of life as you grow older? Now you can do more than just hope for a strong, mobile body as you age. It is possible to turn back the clock! The myth is that as we grow older we get much weaker and suffer more aches and pains and that losing muscle and gaining fat are just part of the aging process. The fact is that many of the symptoms of old age are really symptoms of inactivity.

You can slow and possibly even reverse many of the symptoms associated with aging and Strength Training is the weapon of choice for fighting the physical declines associated with aging. Strength training is extremely important in combating declines in muscle mass, bone density, and metabolism along many other positive results.

Here are just a few of the positive results that have been shown to occur with regular strength training: (more…)

Learn the Barbell Row from ACE

June 24th, 2009 by Healthstyles Exercise Equipment

An advanced level exercise, the barbell row targets the large muscles of the back while challenging the core muscles that are responsible for stabilizing the spine. Learn safe and effective methods to perform this exercise, along with common mistakes to watch for from ACE (American Council on Exercise).

Target Body Part: Arms, Back, Shoulders, Full Body/Integrated
Primary Muscles: Latissimus Dorsi (Lats), Rhomboids, Erector Spinae, Biceps
Secondary Muscles: (Synergists/Stabilizers) Trapezius (Traps), Flexors, Extensors, Serratus Anterior, Rectus Abdominus (abs), Transverse Abdominus, Gluteus Maximus (glutes), Gluteus Medius/Minimus (Abductors), Quadriceps (quads), Hamstrings, Adductors

Equipment Needed: Barbell

For a safer alternative to free weights, try this exercise with a Functional Strength Training system with two low cable grip attachments. The Vectra VFT-100 Functional Trainer or Torque F5 Strength Training System are both excellent choices. You can also perform this exercise from any home gym system that includes a low pulley with a short straight bar attachment. For additional safety, control, and stability, a seated row machine is a good choice for beginners.

Invest in Your Dad’s Health!

June 12th, 2009 by Anne Parker

Over the years, the Father’s Day gift has become synonymous with the impersonal and the uninspiring — the tie, the socks, the bottle of cheap after-shave to add to the unopened collection maturing beneath the bathroom sink. So come June, every American with a father who wants to do something different traipses through the mall and struggles to come up with a new answer to the annual question: What can I get my dad for Father’s Day that is not a tie, nor socks, nor after-shave?

Well, why not give him a healthy Father’s Day gift this year? What about something that might make him feel better, both physically and mentally?

Here are a few ideas that will get him inspired and feeling great. (more…)

Inspire Dad to get Fit this Father’s Day

June 12th, 2009 by Healthstyles Exercise Equipment

On Father’s Day we pay tribute to the sacrifice our dads made for us and we are grateful and appreciative of everything they have done.

Here are two inspirational stories of fathers who are selfless, kind and supportive.

Enjoy…

Olympic sprinter Derek Raymond
Derek Redmond is best remembered for his performance at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona where he tore his hamstring in the 400 metres semi-final but fought through the pain and, with assistance from his father, managed to complete a full lap of the track as the crowd gave him a standing ovation.

"World’s Strongest Dad" Dick Hoyt and his son Rick
Dick and Rick Hoyt are a father-and-son team from Massachusetts who together compete just about continuously in marathon races. And if they’re not in a marathon they are in a triathlon — that daunting, almost superhuman, combination of 26.2 miles of running, 112 miles of bicycling, and 2.4 miles of swimming. Together they have climbed mountains, and once trekked 3,735 miles across America. To date, Dick and Rick have competed in 978 race events, including over 200 triathlons. In 2008, Dick and Rick Hoyt were inducted into the Triathlete Hall of Fame.

It’s a remarkable record of exertion — all the more so when you consider that Rick can’t walk or talk.
