Can you believe that the holidays are right around the corner? This year has flown fast, and we are headed in to the indulgent holiday season. I am a personal trainer and every year at this time I am busier than ever because I have one goal during the holiday season. It is to keep YOU from gaining the typical 5 pounds that the average American adult gains between November 24th and January 1st. I have very good news for you, I am not going to tell you to avoid yummy treats, holiday cocktails and going for seconds at Thanksgiving Dinner. My plan involves eating holiday cookies, having gravy on your mashed potatoes and drinking fabulous wine and cocktails. What? Yes! It’s the holidays and it just wouldn’t be any fun if we eliminated the good stuff.

Here are my top three ways to avoid weight gain during the holidays. It will make things much easier for you in January. Believe me, it’s very easy to gain weight, and very difficult to take it off.

Make a workout plan and stick to it. The holidays are very busy and one of the reasons we gain weight is because we are eating more and working out less. Why not make it easy on yourself and set up an in-home workout program that is quick and produces great results.

Quality over quantity…do a 30 minute high intensity workout 5 days per week and you will have increased energy, eat less (because you are more in tune with your health) and keep those holiday pounds from grabbing on to your mid-section.

Work out first thing in the morning. There are too many after work distractions…get it done early.

Research shows that when Americans spend money on an in-home gym they are more likely to stick to their fitness program. We are held accountable by spending the money on our home fitness area and the convenience of being able to workout at home makes it almost impossible not to workout.

At HealthStyles we have many fitness options to meet the needs of all fitness levels and goals. Here are a few suggestions, and as always, feel free to contact me with specific questions regarding your health and fitness goals.

An indoor cycle and DVD. Your own private spin class that fits into 4 square feet in any room - perfect for small apartments or studios or multi-use family rooms.

Does joint pain get in the way of your workouts? Try a recumbent bike, upright bike, or elliptical trainer.

Are you too busy to workout? Make it short and sweet with an Inspire home gym. A 30-minute circuit training session will do the trick.

On the road? Pack some Spri bands, a FitBall, or your Acuhoop so you don’t miss a workout while visiting friends and family this holiday season.

Not sure where to start? Set up an appointment for a FREE no-obligation In-Store personal training evaluation* at one of HealthStyles’ 11 Colorado retail store locations. And after you’ve purchased your perfect home fitness solution, we’ll provide you with a FREE In-home personal training session* to show you how to achieve the results you want with your new fitness equipment.

Many of us have people in our lives that could benefit from getting on a solid workout and nutrition program, and maybe you need lose a few pounds and start eating better too. The truth is that Americans are overweight, and carrying a few extra pounds around the midsection puts all of us at risk for lifestyle related diseases like cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Have you ever picked up a 10 pound dumbbell? Can you imagine carrying it around all day? I’m sure you can see how that would affect your knees, hips and back.

We need to get out of our old routines and make better choices for our health. The best way to do that is to surround yourself with people who have the same goals. If you are going to start working out every morning at 6am, it is going to be tough if your spouse stays up (and keeps you up) until midnight watching TV. You and your partner are going to have long-term success if you work at it together. It’s a great bonding experience and good clean fun!

And as always, feel free to contact me with specific questions regarding your health and fitness goals.

In real life, our bodies move to the side, backwards, forwards and diagonally. Shouldn’t we train the same way? Traditional weight training tends to be linear and follow one plane of movement. A workout that embraces true function encourages multi-planar training (frontal, sagital, and transverse) which integrates all your motions and mimics real life movement. This will bring a muscular balance to your body, increasing performance and preventing injuries.

Traditionally when we hear “low impact” we think that the workout is not going to be challenging enough to help us reach our fitness goals as fast as possible. No pain, no gain is the old-school way of thinking about fitness. By incorporating multi-planar and high intensity movements people with joint pain can experience a low impact workout that completely challenges the cardiovascular and muscular systems. No more running or jumping, you can see amazing results with low-impact workouts.

A few great tools in your quest for low-impact/high intensity workouts are elliptical trainers, rowers, seated elliptical trainers (by Octane), home gyms that allow for multi-planar movements (by Vectra, Torque, or Inspire), stability balls and balance boards.

Here is a workout to try at home: (beginner/intermediate)

Low Impact/High Intensity Interval Training for Weight Loss

5-minute steady state warm up (walking, elliptical, or bike)
1-minute step-ups (on 6” step) or step side to side without step
1-minute arm run with 3lb. dumbbells (only use your arms, not legs)
1-minute on elliptical or stationary bike (the intensity should be hard)
1-minute crunch and twist on stability ball (regular crunch and then twist at end)
1-minute chair squats (stand in front of chair, sit and stand up)
(repeat this 3 times)
5-minute steady state cool down (walking, elliptical, or bike)

Hopefully the Beijing Olympic games gave you some extra motivation to get started with a new exercise program or take your current fitness to a new level. But the Olympics were last week’s news and now it’s up to you to stay motivated and keep with the program.

Here are a few tips to help you keep your Olympic torch burning.

1) Set Reasonable Goals

Make sure you set reasonable long and short term goals. Start with a long term goal for something that you really want to accomplish. Run a marathon, go on a weekend backpacking trip with the family, go on a cycling vacation tour. There are unlimited options of active goals that are both fun and rewarding that you can look forward to. Once you have a long term goal, break up your training time into small increments to give yourself weekly and monthly milestones to achieve along the way.

2) Add Variety

Don’t be a slave to a single training program. Getting on the treadmill every day repeating the same workout over and over is a surefire way to get bored or burned out. Make sure that you include a variety of exercises in your weekly routine. Try cycling or an elliptical instead of the treadmill. Alternate strength training or some yoga or pilates into your schedule.

3) Intensity

Plan out your schedule to make sure that you alternate hard and easy days. You really only need to focus on challenging yourself with more intense or longer workouts 2 or 3 times per week. The rest of your workout days in between can be fun and relaxing. Try hill intervals on the treadmill one day and go for a fun hike with the family the next.

4) Include Friends and Family

Exercising with friends and family can help keep you on schedule and provide extra motivation during your workouts. Plus with our busy schedules, it’s hard to find good quality time to socialize when we aren’t busy eating or are glued in front of the TV set. Exercise has social benefits beyond physical fitness. Studies have shown that couples who work out together tend to be happier, have better love lives, and have better communication.

5) Rest

Don’t forget that rest is a critical part of your fitness program. If you’re feeling tired and over stressed or other priorities in your life make it too difficult to get through your workout routine, go ahead and take an extra rest day. It’s far better to take a couple extra days off that you need to recharge and refresh yourself than to try to push through your schedule and burn out and stop exercising entirely.

With the Olympic Games in full swing this week, it’s hard not to get motivated to start getting back in shape. If Michael Phelps can bring home 8 gold medals, a 30 minute jog on the treadmill or a few extra reps with the dumbbells can’t be that hard?

Just keep in mind that too much too soon can lead to injury or burn out. Here are a few pointers to get you started on the right track with a long term fitness program:

1) Start slow. When starting a new fitness routine, focus on building a comfortable base level of activity. Don’t worry about miles, speed, or weight at first. In your first weeks of exercising, focus on making your routine an enjoyable part of your weekly schedule.

2) Build up gradually. A good rule of thumb is to follow the 10% rule. You shouldn’t increase your workout volume more than 10% per week. So if you can manage 20 minutes on the elliptical now, aim for 22 the following week. If you add extra workout days to your schedule, you still need to make sure that your total weekly exercise time doesn’t increase more than 10%. It doesn’t seem like much of an increase but you’ll build up quickly over time and each week will be a new success.

3) Don’t forget to rest. Make sure that you alternate adequate rest and recovery between workouts. If you aren’t starting your workout feeling refreshed, fired up, and ready to go, then you’re probably over-doing it.

For five weeks, the 23rd annual Parade of Homes in Denver will attract curious builders and buyers and anyone else interested in the latest in home design and decorating. The event is known as the largest walking tour of luxury homes in the nation, and organizers expect at least 90,000 visitors this year to its west Denver location.

HealthStyles Exercise Equipment is a sponsor of the event and is features in 2 of the homes, La Belle Maison by 9 One 5 Custom Homes, and Bella Vista by Cline Design Group. As a sponsor, HealthStyles will also host a display in the “Great Room” which is at the entrance to the 2008 Parade of Homes.

This year’s Parade is being held at the new Solterra development located at C-470 and Alameda Parkway. The community was envisioned by Carma, a Calgary-based developer with U.S. headquarters in Englewood. Solterra is in the foothills next to Red Rocks Park, and has taken inspiration from regions of France, Italy and Spain to create the feel of a European hillside town.

Carma partnered with Michael Woodley, owner of Woodley Architectural Designs of Highlands Ranch, as a community architect to work with each homebuilder to embrace the characteristics of the foreign villages, with everything from red-tile roofs to intricate stonework to capture a Tuscan culture.

The Home Builders Association of Metro Denver (HBA) created the annual Parade as an educational event for the public, to showcase the latest trends in home building and design.

“This is a great opportunity for HealthStyles Exercise Equipment to showcase the latest in exercise equipment technology from the top manufacturers in the industry, said Dave Sheriff, co-owner of HealthStyles. “We are excited to be a participant in such a quality event that continues to get better every year.”

“The Parade of Homes is a wonderful opportunity for our customers to envision what a comfortable and functional fitness area in their homes could be like. We regularly design exercise rooms for our customers and sit down with them prior to doing a floor plan to discuss what their goals are, what equipment will help them meet their goals, and how those equipment needs can fit in to their available space.”

What: The 23rd Annual Parade of Homes
When: Saturday through Labor Day; hours, Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday, Sunday and Labor Day, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. (ticket sales close one hour before event closes)
